Shared paths and cycling facilities in New Zealand are increasingly used by a more diverse group of people and transport devices. The growth in numbers and diversity of users and devices has prompted this work to augment New Zealand’s Cycling Network Guidance (CNG) to make sure the geometric design of cycling facilities reflects the needs of the current population using these facilities.
2020 is coming to an end. What a crazy year it’s been. But we’ve weathered the storm better than most other countries; thank you to everybody for doing their part. We can and should be most grateful to live in New Zealand.
Despite all the challenges, we have worked on fantastic assignments. Thank you to everyone who trusted us with their projects. We don’t take anything for granted and appreciate the opportunities.
Have you noticed any cycle signals with only red and green (i.e. no yellow) aspects? These are being trialled at certain locations around NZ, and ViaStrada are currently conducting the final evaluations for two locations in Dunedin.
The annual Transportation Group’s Canterbury / West Coast Branch Quiz Night is over for 2020. The theme was lockdown and the outcome is that we will lock down the trophy for another year.
The quiz night has been going for several years. The exact number of years has been lost in the mists of time. This may have been the seventh event, but nobody knows for sure. For the 2018 quiz night, the branch decided to get a nice trophy done. That year, the ViaStrada team won the event for the first time and we put the trophy onto our reception desk. We then won the 2019 quiz.
ViaStrada is researching the needs of e-Mobility (e-Bike, e-Scooter, etc) riders to improve accessibility and safety. For this we are seeking e-Mobility riders who like to share their experience with us. What do you need as a rider of an e-Bike, e-Scooter, or other electrically driven device?
Due to the potential impacts of COVID-19, our staff are currently working at home. This is to minimise the chance of unintended transmission of the virus between our team and with anyone else we interact with.
Niklas has been with us since October 2019. He has been the first intern who we’ve ever had and we all agree that we’ve hit the jackpot – he’s been fantastic to work with across a wide range of our projects. As a student, his project work closely mirrored what ViaStrada does as a company. As such, he really hit the ground running. He’s a quick learner, super-intelligent, and a very pleasant person all round (did we mention his baking skills too?).
We've set a new standard; what an outstanding Transportation Conference! Gemma Dioni from ViaStrada was the convenor for the 2020 conference with a theme "equity in transportation", and there were a large number of new elements included to great acclaim. In July 2017, the NZ Transport Agency published Research Report 621 (Regulations and safety for electric bicycles and other low-powered vehicles). As part of that, we predicted e-bike sales in New Zealand based on what had been happening up until 2016 in New Zealand and Europe.
Safer speeds are a key plank of New Zealand's new road safety strategy. Reduced speeds (through lower speed limits, traffic calming, and other speed management initiatives) have been demonstrated here and internationally to reduce both the likelihood and severity of traffic crashes.
