Kenn Beer introducing 8-80 design within the safe systemOn Thursday 10 November, the Transportation Group ran Creating Safer Streets, Age Friendly Ōtautahi at Tūranga. This interactive workshop was focussed on understanding the lived experience of people young and old, and specifically considered this lived experience when designing a central Christchurch street. 

Inclusive, all age designs were evaluated by how well they achieved the principles of safe system assessments, the pedestrian level of service tool, as well as key principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED).

You may have noticed bilingual traffic signage popping up across Aotearoa?

Following on from @Waka Kotahi’s research on bilingual signs 2021, the He Tohu Huarahi Māori bilingual traffic signs programme was developed.

The ViaStrada team out for dinnerWe recently celebrated legendary staff member Jon Ashford’s coming of age, otherwise known as turning 65! Jon is a senior transportation engineer and CAD specialist who has been with the ViaStrada team since 2010

ViaStrada team at Riverside Kitchen.The ViaStrada team recently enjoyed a mid-winter social night out at Riverside Kitchen.  Split into small teams for a mini ‘Master Chef' style challenge, each team was given a recipe and ingredients to make tasty hors d’oeuvres for everyone.
With much hilarity, a little light-hearted competition, and great food, this was a perfect team-building exercise on a rainy evening!

David has a diploma in civil engineering with over seven years of experience in transportation. David most recently worked for Invercargill City Council where his responsibilities included general road safety, speed management, asset management, and the LED street lighting upgrade. 

Children using the new crossing on State Highway 3 in InglewoodWaka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency requested a proposal for undertaking the detailed design for a signalised pedestrian crossing on State Highway 3 in Inglewood. This was a joint project for Waka Kotahi and New Plymouth District Council. 

This the first Road Safety Platform (RSP) designed by ViaStrada that has been built on a State Highway. RSPs reduce operating speed and road safety is hence improved.
