Rail Safety Week 2025

Did you know that one of ViaStrada’s lesser known, but highly valuable services is conducting Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessments (LCSIAs)?

We are currently working with Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) to assess the safety of their main entry gate level crossing, where increasing volumes of heavy commercial vehicles, cruise ship buses, and trains are creating complex challenges.

Using KiwiRail’s LCSIA methodology, our team visited the site and are now evaluating the potential impacts of proposed layout changes and providing recommendations to improve safety and efficiency. This work builds on several other investigations we’ve undertaken for LPC over the past few years including:

  • A comprehensive safety assessment of the previous main level crossing using KiwiRail’s LCSIA criteria
  • Evaluating proposed changes to port access and traffic flow
  • Recommending design improvements to enhance safety for all road and rail users
