Getting a project right in the early phases is crucial for a good outcome; no amount of tweaking, review, or auditing can recover from a concept that isn’t right. You need a very experienced team for these early project phases and at ViaStrada, you are dealing with the experts. We take your project objectives or problem definition and turn them into concept and scheme designs that will work.

Relevant Projects
Streets for People - Aranui Connections
Christchurch City Council was successful in receiving funding from the Streets for People programme. ViaStrada provided the technical advice and design from the initial concept, and scheme through to detailed design to make Aranui streets more people friendly. This project was rolled out using a tactical urbanism approach to implement changes in a cost-effective manner for the community to adapt to and provide feedback on.
Key Contact: David McCormickNew Plymouth Transport Choices
New Plymouth District Council were successful in securing one of the highest Transport Choices funding allocations in the country to fast‐track separated cycling facilities and improve pedestrian access and public transport provision along key corridors. ViaStrada was engaged by NPDC to lead a team of experts in planning and designing 14 km of key road corridors in New Plymouth.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeLeith Street Design Concept - Dunedin
ViaStrada's strategic walking and cycling network review in 2024 identified Leith St as a secondary cycle route with a suggestion that it will be a low-speed shared zone. NZTA’s current SH88 project includes design changes to Frederick St and St Andrew St. Both roads intersect with Leith St which means this project presents an opportunity to implement parts of a future Leith St cycle route.
Key Contact: John LieswynTikipunga active travel routes - Single stage business case
The Tikipunga Single Stage Business Case actions the identified fifth route in the hub and spoke main corridor model within the Whangārei Walking and Cycling Strategy (2018) . The focus of the business case is the city links programme, connecting the Tikipunga town centre to Whangārei City Centre, based primarily upon the residential growth occurring in the area. Following community input, further supporting programme options and recommendations showed a need for local links (between amenities in Tikipunga and Otangarei) and recreational links (for leisure and sports).
Key Contact: John LieswynWaimakariri Junction Intersection
For this project we sub-contracted to TM Consultants to develop a concept, scheme, and detailed design for the signalised intersection at the Waimakariri Junction commercial development. We also designed much of the internal road layout of the development. The new intersection design incorporated the following objectives:
safety, efficiency, to provide access for people in vehicles, and people walking and cycling.Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeKerikeri Transport Choices
ViaStrada supported Far North District Council with a successful application for funding through Climate Emergency Response Funding Transport Choices in late 2022, (ViaStrada assisted earlier in the case for funding for FNDC, see here).
Key Contact: John LieswynWhangārei Bike Hubs
As part of the Whangārei Citywide Walking and Cycling Programme Business Case, ViaStrada used a geospatial data collection tool to identify existing, upgraded, and new cycle parking locations throughout the city. The lack of bike parking was identified as one of three main problems in the business case.
Key Contact: John LieswynMeeanee / Murphy intersection, Napier
Napier City Council contracted ViaStrada to design an upgrade for the existing signalised T-intersection at its Meeanee / Murphy intersection. The objective was to improve safety, especially for people cycling and walking outside this school site.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeGlenview bus hub
ViaStrada was sub-contracted to design midblock signals for a state highway site in Hamilton’s suburb Glenview. The signals were to accommodate a new bus interchange. Design challenges included the site being close to the rural-urban boundary.
ViaStrada’s team provided a design that was accepted by the road controlling authorities involved. Our team also assisted the main consultant (our partners at Urban Connection) with some more complex traffic engineering tasks.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeHone Heke / Cobham roundabout
Kerikeri is growing fast, and with growth comes traffic congestion. The Hone Heke / Cobham intersection is becoming more and more difficult to navigate for motorists and the thousands of children attending the nearby primary and high school. ViaStrada came up with a roundabout option that improves safety and access for everyone.
In June 2021, ViaStrada reviewed the network traffic model reports and confirmed the suitability of a roundabout. We developed concept designs for two options to fit the available public space.
