Many new or upgraded land developments (including commercial/retail facilities, industrial sites, airports, hospitals) have potential impacts that affect safe access and parking within the site itself and on nearby roads and intersections.
ViaStrada can assist with the design of layout options (including intersections and parking) to minimise these safety impacts. We can also audit safety and operational issues of already developed designs and recommend improvements.
ViaStrada was commissioned by Threefold Architecture to provide a traffic assessment for Beale & Cullen Dental practice at 393 Papanui Road for the fulfilment of a Christchurch City Council request for information.
For this project we sub-contracted to TM Consultants to develop a concept, scheme, and detailed design for the signalised intersection at the Waimakariri Junction commercial development. We also designed much of the internal road layout of the development. The new intersection design incorporated the following objectives:
safety, efficiency, to provide access for people in vehicles, and people walking and cycling.
In order to optimise the function and safety of the route by mode and time of day, ViaStrada and Aurecon conducted site audits at eight intersections; researched the planning and engineering context; identified capacity constraints; analysed crash data and safety issues, considered modal requirements; identified engineering and operational improvements with costings.
A significant increase in passenger numbers at Queenstown Airport put pressure on many parts of the existing infrastructure, including the road network, car and coach parking, terminal servicing and passenger drop off and collection facilities.
ViaStrada developed multiple concept through to design plans that incorporated QAC staff input for all vehicle and pedestrian facilities at the airport, including significant changes to the roading network and car and coach parking areas. All proposed works were incorporated in a staged Master Plan.
ViaStrada designed the internal roads for Nazareth House, a retirement village and healthcare complex in the Christchurch suburb of Sydenham.
As part of the Integrated Transport Plan to support the Kaiapoi Town Centre Plan, ViaStrada has developed intersection options and concept designs for Williams Street, the main thoroughfare through the town centre. One option includes a redesign of the existing roundabouts to better cater for pedestrian crossings and truck turning movements. One of the intersections featured a particularly acute angle presenting a design challenge and potential stakeholder acceptability issues.
In 2009, Gehl Architects prepared a study entitled Public Space Public Life (2010) that considered how people use public spaces and streets in central Christchurch. This precedent study resulted in Christchurch City Council's adoption of A City for People Action Plan (2010), which includes 66 related actions based on the recommendations in the study.
Some of those actions were addressed by this project, which was delivered in two stages.
ViaStrada was commissioned by Christchurch International Airport Ltd to conduct a review of a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Ron Guthrey Drive and two new roads, which would form part of the new Dakota Park development precinct at the airport. The development will provide a high standard of accommodation for warehousing, logistics industries and other businesses.
The objective of the review was to determine if the land required for the proposed roundabout was appropriate and whether the proposed design was safe and had capacity for the future.
The client wanted to show that they had made provision for various on street parking demands in FiveMile. This included short and long term parking and included loading zones. Added to this was the identification of ramps to and from the off street underground parking.
The study provides an analysis of the existing traffic environment and makes recommendations on appropriate remedial measures where necessary. The study has been conducted in the context of Local Area Traffic Management (LATM), which is supported by a number of Council strategies and the legal strategic framework of the City Plan.
