World Engineering Day 2026

4th March 2026

Today is World Engineering Day, a good time to reflect on what transport engineering actually does for people.

Every journey you made successfully today happened because someone engineered it to work. The geometry of an intersection, the phasing of traffic signals, the width of a footpath… Good transport engineering is largely invisible when it's done well. Crashes happen less frequently. People arrive safely at destinations. Streets feel more welcoming.

At ViaStrada, we work on making New Zealand's streets safer and more usable for everyone: people walking, cycling, scooting, using a bus, or driving. From road safety audits to multi-modal street design, our focus is transport environments where all users are genuinely considered.

This year's theme, ‘Smart engineering for a sustainable future…’, resonates with us. Sustainable transport means designing streets where road trauma is reduced and where communities have real transport options. Engineering makes that possible. To every transport engineer and planner working to make streets better: what you do matters.
