Initial information below! - 2025 count
What is a cycling cordon count?
An annual survey of people on bikes and micromobility traveling into and out of the central city over five weekday mornings.
Why are we doing this?
To help plan, manage and evaluate our city’s transport network; to gather data on people scooting and cycling to track changes over time.
What’s in it for me?
- Up to $334 (see Compensation instructions below)
- Work experience
- Contribute valuable data to help us provide a better transport system
When is the online briefing?
Briefing 1 - 5:30-6pm, 20th of February 2025
Briefing 2 - 5:30-6pm, 24th of February 2025
A Zoom link will be emailed to you for both of these. Attendance at one of these two briefings is mandatory.
When is the count?
7 am – 9 am for five consecutive days between Monday 3 March 2025 and Friday 14 March 2025 (see weather delay policy).
You must be able to do all 5 days
Where do I go to do my survey?
Site assignments will be emailed to you after the briefings. Your name will be removed if you do not attend one of the two briefings.
How do I pick up my count data forms?
After receiving your assignment (posted on this site and emailed following the briefing), go to the Wellington City Council reception (Level 16, 113 The Terrace) between 8 am and 5 pm from the 24th to the 28th of Feb. There will be a box of envelopes and a checkout sheet. Enter your name in the row with your site ID and take the envelope with you.
What to bring on the day of the count
Jacket & warm clothes, two pencils or pens, sunscreen. Optional: hat, folding chair, something to drink (but not too much – it will ruin the dataset if you must take a comfort break!). if your site enables you to sit in a vehicle and see everything needed, then you may do this.
Be on-site at 6:45 am and text your name and site number to 021 548 972
Weather delay policy
We will monitor expected minimum temperatures and maximum winds. The count will go ahead unless the forecast is for heavy rain or high winds. Do not assume a postponement - check on this page for notices and we will also email any postponement notices not later than 7 pm on the day preceding the next count day.
Delay scenario example (the exact days could vary):
Scenario 1. Fine weather is predicted on Monday 3 March through Wednesday 5 March, but a storm arrives on Thursday. The forecast is clear for the following week. Count days will therefore be 3, 4, 5, 13, and 15 March so that one of each weekday is captured.
Scenario 2. High winds are forecast for Monday and Tuesday 3 and 4 March. Fine weather is predicted after that. Count days will therefore be 5, 6, 7, 10, and 11 March so that one of each weekday is captured.
Compensation
We pay $27.80 /hr for up to 12 hours ($334 maximum) upon completing the work and submitting a complying invoice (this will be included in your forms).
This breaks down as: 0.5-hour briefing, 2 hours for each of the five morning counts, 0.25 hours each day to arrive early on site so we can check on you, and 0.25 hours after the last day for us to pick up your forms.
There is no allowance for travel time, sorry.
