Background

ViaStrada was engaged by Dunedin City Council (DCC) to provide expert review and advice on three active transport infrastructure projects currently in development. The objective was to ensure the designs support safety, cost-effectiveness, and improved outcomes for all road users before moving to final design or implementation.

The three projects were:

  1. Albany Street Connection - reviewing the detailed design to explore options for additional parking while maintaining safe active mode access; conducting value engineering to identify cost-saving opportunities
  2. SH1 Dunedin Safety Improvements - advising on infrastructure upgrades for people walking and cycling at the Pine Hill Road/Great King Street intersection and the surrounding network.
  3. SH88 St Andrew Street Intersection - reviewing concept designs, proposed traffic signals operations, and traffic modelling for the St Andrew Street/Anzac Avenue intersection to ensure optimal function and safety.

The advice was primarily delivered through online workshops with DCC staff, followed by brief reports or presentation files summarising key findings and recommendations.

This collaborative peer review proces helped the Client proceed with confidence, balancing safety, usability, and fiscal responsiblity in the development of key transport links.
