Background
New Zealand’s conservation estate includes many campgrounds and walking trails that are at least partially accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The Department of Conservation (DOC) engaged ViaStrada to undertake a pilot programme to update DOC’s existing accessibility information and recommend improvements. To deliver the project, ViaStrada partnered with Smart Access Limited, Bridget Doran Consulting, and the Kennett Brothers.
We audited 30 high-traffic sites around the country, with over 50 individual experiences (campgrounds and trails) between them. The Recreation Aotearoa Outdoor Accessibility Design Guidelines were a key resource that informed what the team looked for and what recommendations were made. The audit process involved pushing a 3D printed Smart Access cart around the site. As the cart travelled, the mounted smartphone recorded data in the dedicated app for 40+ variables, including gradient and crossfall data, surface photographs, and stair locations. The site auditor also took their own field notes and photographs. On returning to the office, the data was used to report on the site’s current conditions and make recommendations.
