Northland Local Area Traffic Management and Speed Management Improvements (2020-2023)

Between 2020 and 2023, ViaStrada delivered a programme of local area traffic management and speed management projects across Northland, helping communities create safer, more accessible streets. The work included investigations, option development, concept and detailed design, visualisations, and community engagement support for projects in Rawene, Ahipara, Kaikohe, and Moerewa.

Rawene
ViaStrada developed traffic calming improvements along the approach to the Rawene ferry terminal, addressing concerns about drivers accelerating through a residential area and school environment to catch ferry departures. The proposed treatments aimed to create a safer and more self-explaining road environment for local residents and students.

Ahipara
ViaStrada prepared a package of speed management improvements for Ahipara, including raised safety platforms and supporting traffic calming measures designed to reinforce appropriate operating speeds and improve conditions for people moving around the community. In response to concerns from Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s local staff, ViaStrada calculated the travel time impacts and compared this to the safety benefits of the proposals.

Kaikohe
In Kaikohe, ViaStrada developed traffic calming scheme designs to enhance the walkability of the area and improve accessibility for pedestrians while maintaining the function of the local road network.

Moerewa
Following on from trials implemented under the Innovating Streets funding programme, ViaStrada undertook a Local Area Traffic Management investigation for Moerewa, identifying opportunities to improve safety and support lower vehicle speeds throughout the township. The project included site assessments, option development, concept design, visualisations, consultation materials, and construction-ready designs for a range of traffic calming measures on Otiria Road, Mason Avenue, and Pembroke Street.

Together, these projects demonstrate ViaStrada's experience in delivering practical, community-focused transport solutions that balance safety, accessibility, and network efficiency across a variety of rural and small-town environments.
