Tennyson Street Cycle Path Review

1st October 2008

ViaStrada is reviewing the Tennyson St cycle path facility in Christchurch, some 7 years after it was constructed.

In 2001, the Christchurch City Council reconstructed Tennyson Street between Colombo Street and the Heathcote River in Beckenham, including a new kind of cycling facility. The design uses off-road cycle paths between the footpath and the kerb, with a narrower roadway than previously for motor vehicles. Some people love it; some hate it!

ViaStrada is reviewing the operation of the facility for the Christchurch City Council. In October an on-line survey of users was conducted. Survey respondents were able to enter a draw for a prize; details of the prize-winner will be announced shortly! Work continues on analysing the survey, counting cycle and motor vehicle traffic and reviewing the crash history. A final report is expected before the end of the year.
