Background
ViaStrada, in collaboration with DCM Urban, developed multiple options to upgrade a busy road fronting Whakatāne’s largest high school. These included low-cost "paint and posts" solutions to more permanent pathway and pedestrian crossing features, with a potential staged approach to delivery. Designs incorporated speed management measures, parking layout options, and drop-off/pick-up zone improvements.
The work included the identification of utility service conflicts, car parking impacts, and cost estimates. The preferred option improves safety for all road users and indicates a potential to increase the number of car parks from 65 to 84.
ViaStrada also supported stakeholder and community engagement throughout the process.
