Background
ViaStrada was engaged to undertake a parking assessment of the Greers Road / Wairakei Road intersection shopping area to assist the council in considering safety improvements and to understand the occupancy and turnover rate. This information helped to provide an evidence-based approach toward improving safety and user outcomes for all users at the intersection.
The safety improvements included:
- reducing the number of parking spaces along Greers Road
- changing existing angled parking to parallel parking removing conflict between reversing vehicles and through vehicles
- widening the footpath width outside the Greers Road shops
- proposed on-road cycle lanes throughout the full intersection
- creating opposing right turning bays for all approaches to improve intervisibility and turning safety
- removal of the existing shared through and right and left turning lanes on Greers Road.
