Background

Road Feasibility and Access Assessment – Port Tarakohe

The work has two main objectives:
1. Assess road alignment options Evaluate whether a future legal road can be formed along either Road A (the existing access) or Road B (an alternative alignment), with particular focus on compliance with the Nelson Tasman Land Development Manual (NTLDM).

2. Identify broader traffic safety considerations Go beyond strict compliance checking to advise on traffic-related factors consistent with best practice and a safe systems approach — particularly given the existing and anticipated concentration of conflict points near the Port intersection.

The underlying trigger for the work is the possibility that land currently served by the existing access may be subdivided in the future, at which point a legal road would need to be formally consented and vested — and there is doubt about whether the existing alignment can meet the required standards.

ViaStrada ultimately recommended Road B as the preferred option as the safer and more robust long-term access, offering reduced conflict, improved visibility, and better alignment with future port traffic demands and future nearby developments.
