Fundamentals of Planning and Design for Cycling

New Plymouth - Thu 6 Nov 2008

Developed in conjunction with Land Transport NZ and Transit NZ (now the NZ Transport Agency) to meet the needs of the NZ transportation industry. Attendee numbers limited to 25.

Do you know the answer to these questions?

  • What are FOUR ways to monitor cycle numbers?
  • What is the IHT Five-Step Hierarchy for Cycling?
  • What are FOUR reasons for increasing the width of cycle lanes beyond the desirable minimum of 1.5 m?
  • What signs/markings should you use on a shared path?
  • What are the SIX Elements of Intersection Continuity for
  • What are FOUR different Land Transport NZ activity classes that can fund cycling projects?

If you aren't sure of the answers to these questions, then perhaps it's time for some Continuing Professional Development.

Fundamentals of Planning and Design for Cycling

ViaStrada runs a one-day course to introduce the principles of planning and design for cycling in New Zealand. The course is aimed at anybody planning, designing or reviewing roads or other facilities used by cyclists. This includes planners, general roading engineers and road safety practitioners. A number of local body politicians, people involved in the health sector (HEHA - healthy eating healthy action) and cycling advocates have also attended the course. To date, over 600 people have attended Fundamentals of Planning and Design for Cycling.

Employees of local councils and their consultants and others should consider enrolling for this excellent training opportunity, being offered for the first time in New Plymouth. This year's IPENZ Tranportation Conference will be held in New Plymouth from 2 to 5 November, and the Fundamentals course will be held on 6 November.

All participants will receive a hard copy set of presentation slides, detailed course notes and the recently-updated NZ Supplement to Austroads Part 14: Bicycles.

Course presenters will be Axel Wilke and Andrew Macbeth, directors of ViaStrada Ltd, Christchurch. Both are well-known in New Zealand for their expertise in sustainable transport and especially cycle planning and design. Please do not hesitate to contact Axel (03-343-8221) or Andrew (03-343-8224) if you have any questions about course content or whether the course is appropriate for you.
