Strengthening Our Rail Crossing Expertise
As rail infrastructure, active transport networks, and land development become increasingly interconnected, ensuring safe interactions between rail and road users remains a critical part of transport planning and design.
To support this work, ViaStrada's Glen Koorey recently completed the KiwiRail Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessment (LCSIA) Practitioner Course, achieving his accreditation and building on many years of specialist knowledge, previous training, and practical experience in railway crossing safety assessments.
The course provides practitioners with the latest guidance on applying Safe System principles and risk assessment methodologies under the updated (v6) Level Crossing Risk Management Guide. This accreditation supports work involving Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessments, crossing upgrades, safety audits, and development proposals that may affect rail corridor safety.
While ongoing professional development is an important part of maintaining industry best practice, our rail crossing expertise extends well beyond formal training. ViaStrada has been involved in the development of national guidance that continues to shape rail safety practice across New Zealand. Our team contributed to the initial development of both the Guidelines for Pedestrian and Cycle Rail Crossings and the KiwiRail Level Crossing Risk Assessment Guide, helping establish consistent approaches to assessing and managing crossing risks.
This experience is complemented by a wide range of practical project work. Recent examples include undertaking LCSIAs for the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail Extension and the Hokitika Gibson Quay development, as well as providing rail crossing reviews and design advice for Lyttelton Port. These projects have required close collaboration with KiwiRail, local authorities, developers, and infrastructure owners to identify risks and develop solutions that improve safety while supporting wider project objectives.
By combining current accreditation, guideline development experience, and hands-on project delivery, ViaStrada is well placed to help clients navigate rail safety requirements and achieve safer outcomes for road users, rail operators, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
