ViaStrada Presenting at SNUG 2026
ViaStrada’s Megan Gregory and Axel Downard-Wilke will be presenting two technical papers at the upcoming Signals NZ User Group (SNUG) Workshop in Wellington, sharing insights into current industry guidance and intersection safety research.
The first presentation, “Stops and Goes: The Next Generation”, explores the recent update of New Zealand’s long-standing traffic signal guidance document, Stops and Goes. Originally developed more than 20 years ago, the document has been refreshed to reflect contemporary practice, including updated guidance on pedestrian and cyclist facilities, bus priority measures, signal phasing, operational considerations, and traffic signal review processes. The presentation also reflects on how the industry has evolved over the past two decades and the value of continued collaboration and knowledge sharing through SNUG.
Their second presentation, “Left Turn Treatments at Signalised Intersections”, examines the safety performance of different left turn treatments, including conventional signalised left turns and slip lanes. Drawing on research from New Zealand and Australia, the review compares pedestrian and cyclist safety outcomes and highlights how design factors such as slip lane geometry, crossing treatments, and intersection layout can influence safety performance. The presentation aims to bring together existing evidence and contribute to ongoing discussions about best-practice intersection design.
