Stops and goes of traffic signals: Perspectives from signal practitioners
Commissioned by SNUG, ViaStrada’s update to the Stops and goes of traffic signals manual is a substantial refresh of the original 2005/2006 guidance, bringing it into line with contemporary traffic signal design practice in New Zealand. While the original document was derived based on audits of signalised intersections, the revised version combines those historic findings with practitioner experience, industry survey feedback, and current industry best practice.
The most significant changes reflect the evolution of transport engineering over the last two decades. The guide now includes more detail on pedestrian protection and accessibility, and the layouts and operations for incorporating more advanced cycling infrastructure at signalised intersections. It also introduces guidance on bus priority measures including queue jumps, active signal priority and bus gates. The guide now concludes with a comprehensive traffic signal review checklist that consolidates the document’s recommendations into a practical auditing and peer-review tool, helping designers and road controlling authorities assess safety, efficiency, accessibility and multimodal performance at signalised intersections.
