Albert/Grey Roundabout design audit, Palmerston North

ViaStrada was engaged by Palmerston North City Council  to undertake a preliminary design stage safety audit of a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Albert Street, a local road with an AADT of 6,033 and Grey Street, a collector road with an AADT of 7,600. Both roads have a posted speed limit of 50 km/h. The intersection is located in a residential area to the north east of the city centre.

It is proposed that the existing priority controlled crossroads is replaced with a roundabout of sufficient size to accommodate B-train turning movements. Both roads will be expected to carry the full range of road users.

ViaStrada recognise the need for careful horizontal and vertical geometric design to make roundabouts safer for all road users and bring this expertise to safety auditing of roundabouts.
