Assessing traffic characteristics for safe pedestrian crossings: Developing warrants for sustainable urban safety

Growing urban traffic volumes have increased interactions between pedestrians and vehicles, highlighting the need for safer and more effective crossing facilities. This research develops evidence-based pedestrian crossing warrants tailored to Indian traffic conditions by analysing traffic volumes, pedestrian behaviour, gap acceptance, and waiting times.
Using PV² analysis and K-means clustering, the study identifies thresholds for different levels of pedestrian crossing need and recommends appropriate crossing treatments. The findings provide a practical framework for improving pedestrian safety, supporting active transport, and promoting sustainable urban mobility through data-driven transport planning.
