NSW Fatigue-related rural road crashes & solutions

Background

Transport for New South Wales commissioned ViaStrada to create a benefit cost analysis tool that assesses measures that prevent fatigue-related road crashes. Based on this tool, ViaStrada also assisted with the preparation of presentation material to make the case for investment in safety measures to address driver fatigue, including tactile line-markings, safety barriers, and rest areas.

In 2015, 57 people died on NSW roads as a result of fatigue; this accounts for 12% of the total state-wide road fatalities. The Safe System Approach was utilised to develop options to address likelihood and severity of fatigue-related crashes:

The scope of ViaStrada's work included developing an Excel benefit cost analysis, and preparing a two-page handout and a presentation making the case for fatigue-related safety investment.
