Background
ViaStrada was engaged by Marlborough Roads to investigate options for improving pedestrian safety on Alabama Road outside Redwoodtown School. The project responded to concerns about students and caregivers crossing a busy road that carries around 4,000 vehicles per day, including a high number of heavy vehicles, with no formal crossing currently provided near the school.
The key objectives of the project were to:
• Make crossing Alabama Road safer for pedestrians
• Reduce the severity of crashes involving pedestrians
• Provide a crossing that works well with heavy traffic volumes
• Minimise impacts on the surrounding school and residential community
Based on national design guidance, ViaStrada provided two design options with a table clearly outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each for the client to consider.
