Background

“RiverLink” (now Te Awa Kairangi) is a partnership between NZTA, Greater Wellington RC and Hutt City Council focussing on flood protection, transport connections and urban development, particularly around the Melling Bridge area.

Cycling Action Network (CAN) and associated parties partially opposed the existing RiverLink consent in written submissions. In particular, they were seeking better and safer cycle provision in the final design and build, over and above the cycling provisions currently proposed. CAN asked ViaStrada to provide technical advice (particularly regarding the active transport provisions of the proposals) and to appear as an expert witness.

The work included a site visit to the area of interest, and the preparation of suitable briefing notes and evidence to support CAN’s case and to respond to replies by the applicant. There was also expert mediation, expert conferencing, and finally presenting evidence at an Environment Court.
