As part of the Whangārei Citywide Walking and Cycling Programme Business Case, ViaStrada used a geospatial data collection tool to identify existing, upgraded, and new cycle parking locations throughout the city. The lack of bike parking was identified as one of three main problems in the business case.
Whangārei then succeeded in attracting central government’s Transport Choices funding (the only city to be approved for bike parking). ViaStrada collaborated closely with the Council’s property contractor to identify sites. ViaStrada then prioritised the sites using proximity to jobs (census dataset) and attractions (Open Street Maps dataset). Finally, a design plan set was developed to show what type of bike parking and layout would fit at each site.
