Safe System Assessments in Christchurch

Background

Christchurch City Council’s transport team has completed many safety improvements over the last National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) period. Multiple streams of funding included Transport Choices, Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF), Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Facility (CRAFT) and other transport funds were used to complete multiple projects throughout Ōtautahi.

Safe system assessments allow for multiple design options to be investigated at the preliminary or scheme design level to ensure that all possible solutions have been investigated. A safe system assessment ranks each design option against the existing conditions to ensure that all users are provided with the safest option. ViaStrada completed safe system assessments for the following projects:

  • Burwood / Mairehau Road roundabout intersection primary safe system safety improvements
  • Transport Choices – school safety
  • CERF – Westmorland separated cycleway and signalised crossing
  • CERF – Little River cycle path connections
  • CERF – Smith and Rhona Street neighbourhood greenway
  • Church Corner signalised intersections primary safe system safety improvements
  • Bradshaw Street kerb and channel renewal
  • Marine Parade
  • Chelsea Street
Objective
