Background

Vogel Street Design: Creating a Safer, More Accessible Dunedin

As part of the Ōtepoti Dunedin Pathways Plan, the Vogel Street Improvements project is set to transform a key central city corridor into a primary active transport route. The project will support safer, more attractive travel for people walking, cycling, and using micromobility devices—helping to link the city centre with SH1 cycle lanes, Princes Street, and the future Dunedin Tunnels Trail at the Oval.

The full length of Vogel Street, from Queens Gardens in the north to the Oval in the south, will be developed into a low-speed, low-traffic shared street. The design is tailored to appeal to a wide range of users, including pedestrians, “interested but concerned” cyclists, and micromobility users such as e-scooters and mobility scooters.

The project also aligns with nearby upgrades planned for Princes Street and SH1, offering a coordinated and connected approach to sustainable transport across Dunedin.

ViaStrada was engaged to assist with the early-stage design process and went above and beyond the original brief. Working within budget, we delivered not only a written memo and concept designs in a PowerPoint presentation, but also an interactive webmap that showcases both existing conditions and proposed improvements—helping stakeholders clearly visualise the transformation ahead.
