Hidden Harm – Walking Injuries from Slips and Falls

Living Streets Aotearoa 2025 Walking Summit, online
Traditionally, serious pedestrian injuries on our streets and paths are captured by Police reporting (e.g. CAS), which tends to overlook several incidents resulting from slip, trip and fall events. Using ACC and hospital admission data, the true scale of these injury numbers was identified from four recent case studies:
- An Auckland study of harm to vulnerable transport users outside of motor vehicles
- A Ministry of Transport national Domestic Transport Costs & Charges study
- A Christchurch study of harm on the road network
- A Wellington study of injuries to older road users
All of these studies highlight how much NZ's serious pedestrian injuries are under-reported in our conventional crash-recording systems.
At the 2025 Walking Summit (held online), Glen gave a presentation summarising these four case studies and suggesting potential lessons going forward.
