Laying low to send a signal: low-level cycle signal trial
Where presented / published:
2024 Signals NZ User Group (SNUG) Workshop, Christchurch, 4–6 September 2024
Megan presented on low-level cycle signals – a new traffic control device that several Road Controlling Authorities, led by Wellington City Council, wish to apply to trial in New Zealand. Low-level cycle signals are smaller than standard cycle signals and can be mounted at cyclist eye height so that they can be seen by cyclists waiting at the limit line. They would address issues experienced with standard cycle signals such as difficulties fitting in all the signals required at an intersection, cycleways that go around a bend and render far-side signals impractical, and unwanted light directed towards residential properties. The next stage of the project is to develop the trial application; Megan discussed the anticipated trial methodology.
