On 11 September 2026, an invited online guest lecture on the Safe System Approach to Road Safety was delivered by Ashu Kedia to the student chapter of the Institution of Transportation Engineers (ITE) at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy), India.
The session was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering programmes. The lecture introduced the principles of the Safe System approach and discussed the need for a holistic and proactive approach to road safety that recognises human vulnerability and seeks to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the transport network.
Drawing on international and practical examples, Ashu's presentation highlighted contemporary road safety challenges and demonstrated how Safe System thinking can be applied in transport planning, road design, policy development, and network management. The session provided students with an opportunity to engage with current road safety practices and their application in creating safer, more sustainable transport systems.
The lecture was coordinated by Dr Darshana Othayoth, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, and formed part of the professional development activities of the ITE student chapter.
