Data collection & analysis

Good transport data is key to understanding existing patterns in our transport networks and the potential effects of proposed changes. ViaStrada has extensive experience in collecting transport data for a wide array of metrics and road user types. We use many different types of equipment to gather data, including speed guns, rubber tubes, and video monitoring. We also make use of online surveys and in-person consultations to obtain perception and behavioural data. Where necessary, we can also coordinate manual field surveys using both our staff and contracted temporary surveyors.

We have collected data related to motor vehicles, buses, pedestrians, cyclists and other wheeled users, as well as related transport infrastructure. Typical information captured includes volumes, speeds, user characteristics, parking occupancies, asset conditions, and potential conflicts. Using this data, we can report on and monitor existing and past trends, and also model predictions for future trends. We use various spreadsheet and GIS tools to analyse our findings.

ViaStrada is also able to advise clients on the best way for them to develop data collection and monitoring programmes for their networks, including options for technology/methods to use and optimal locations for monitoring.
