Broken yellow lines
As part of the development of the recent Cycle network guidance - planning and design, ViaStrada and Abley Transportation Consultants recommended that marking no-stopping lines (aka "broken yellow lines" or BYLs) in kerbside cycle lanes be acknowledged as best practice and adopted across the country. As a result, this principle will be reflected in the Traffic Control Devices Manual (which is yet to be released) as one of the items that the Transport Agency seeks feedback on and Road Controlling Authorities throughout the country have indicated they will specify it as default practice.
The attached text builds on a 2009 conference paper to explain in detail why it is important to mark no-stopping lines in kerbside cycle facilities. In the image below, drivers are parked with one set of wheels in a kerbside cycle lane (no BYLs) and their other set of wheels on the footpath.
