Background

Hamilton Kirikiriroa has adopted a Connected Neighbourhoods vision: “I can go anywhere on my bike”. To help achieve this vision, and ensure consistent provision across projects, ViaStrada has developed a Code of Practice for biking and micro-mobility.

The Code of Practice starts by describing the fundamentals of providing for biking and micro-mobility, safety, coherence, directness, comfort and attractiveness. It then outlines the planning process, which supplements NZTA’s Cycling Network Guidance and hinges on the All Ages and Abilities (AAA) target audience.

The design section of the Code of Practice details the user design parameters (dimensions and speeds) and sight distance requirements, features that must be front of mind from the start of the design process. It presents the types of treatments available in midblock and intersection locations, and the parameters under which each treatment can be applied. It also covers aspects such as transitions between facility types, cycle facilities at bus stops, other kerbside activities such as waste collection, and parking.
