Background
ViaStrada was commissioned to undertake a series of post construction safety audits for the Waitaki District Council. Safety audits were carried out on intersection treatments in two urban locations in Oamaru and five rural pavement rehabilitation projects.
The audits followed guidelines set out in the Transfund New Zealand's Road Safety Audit Guide (2004). To undertake the audits, ViaStrada used the WDC District Plan, MOTSAM parts 1 and 2, the NZ Geometric Design Manual (draft) and current best practice used and taught by ViaStrada.
The aim was to complete the design process for NZTA funding and help the local authority take measures to minimise further incidents on their roads.
A detailed study of available data as well as site inspections of each of the audit sites resulted in a comprehensive report giving practical recommendations for every safety issue raised.
