Mission Bay & St Heliers safety reviews

Background

Auckland Transport commissioned ViaStrada to conduct an independent review of the Mission Bay & St Heliers speed management proposals.

AT proposed making changes including speed limits, pedestrian platforms, and intersection and parking layouts in the village to improve safety and accessibility for all road users, especially vulnerable road users (those walking and cycling). Consultation with the community on the proposals was completed during April 2019.
A review was undertaken considering strategic documents, existing and future road user demand and behaviour, traffic speeds, crash data and safety measures.

It was found that Mission Bay and St Heliers villages were among the top-ranking town centres and villages in terms of road safety concern and therefore a case for some safety improvements could be made. AT’s process used to establish the relative safety ranking of Mission Bay & St Heliers among town/village centres was entirely valid. Further engagement with the local community was recommended to explain the rationale for the selection of these locations, and to determine the most appropriate treatments to help achieve improvements to safety outcomes.
