Meeanee / Murphy intersection, Napier

Napier City Council contracted ViaStrada to design an upgrade for the existing signalised T-intersection at its Meeanee / Murphy intersection. The objective was to improve safety, especially for people cycling and walking outside this school site.

The intersection provided a surprising number of challenges: with many coach buses turning here, the non-perpendicular layout provided for challenging tracking; an existing pedestrian crosswalk was partially used by drivers turning into a school driveway, large power poles required non-standard signal placement that provided good conspicuity, and underground services required a redesign during construction. Close collaboration between client, consultant and contractor helped overcome all these issues without any trouble.
