Background
Lyttelton Port regularly receives passenger cruise ships during the summer season at its purpose-built cruise berth. On cruise ship days, dedicated coaches and shuttles will run passengers from the berth to destinations around Lyttelton and Christchurch.
ViaStrada has worked with Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) to investigate improvements to bus parking and circulation arrangements at the cruise berth, supporting safer and more efficient operations for passengers, drivers and service providers.
In 2019, our team assessed the proposed coach parking layouts and access, with respect to swept tracking paths, and recommended a few improvements. Following the assessment, LPC made some minor modifications to the bus turning and loading areas.
More recently in 2026, our team revisited the issue to address concerns about incidents occurring with the current layout. The aim was to improve the safety and user experience for all cruise ship users and service providers. We developed a range of concept layout options, assessing the advantages and constraints of each, while ensuring they were operationally feasible for the buses using the site.
Using vehicle tracking and layout planning, we explored solutions that could minimise or eliminate bus reversing movements through a one-way circulation system. The preferred concept was then refined into a detailed plan to support future design development and implementation.
