Background

In 2018, the NZ Transport Agency developed a Safe Networks Programme to address road safety improvements to the country’s roads and roadsides. Part of that work included the establishment of a Speed Management programme to deliver safe and appropriate speeds on local roads and state highways.

As part of a nationally appointed panel, working with Urban Connection, ViaStrada provided technical advice to NZTA for the review of speed limits on various sections of state highways in the lower two -thirds of New Zealand. The work involved both desktop analysis of existing highway attribute and risk data, and field surveys of potential locations for speed limit changes. Sections investigated by ViaStrada included SH6 Buller Gorge, SH1 Foxton-Levin, and SH6 South Westland.
