Background
ViaStrada were engaged by Whakatāne District Council to undertake a detailed design safety audit in June 2022 and the post-construction audit in November 2024 of the Thornton Road re-alignment project. The project consisted of a 2.0 km long section of rural road comprising nine small, out-of-context radius curves with the adjacent road alignment. The realignment project involved buying property and relocating streetlight poles to optimise the alignment design.
