Staged pedestrian crossings

The presentation illustrates the basic concepts of staged pedestrian crossings compared with traditional crossings at signalised intersections, including operational methods and physical requirements.

The results of a case study where staged pedestrian crossing installations at three Christchurch intersections were modelled to predict the effects on efficiency are presented. Several points focusing on the safety of staged pedestrian crossings are discussed.

The presentation concludes that staged pedestrian crossings are a sensible solution in terms of safety and efficiency (both for motorists and pedestrians) and should be implemented in Christchurch.
