All planned, new, or upgraded transport facilities should be assessed for the potential safety impacts that the changes may have on various road users, particularly where there is the chance of death or serious injury.
ViaStrada staff are formally trained in road safety & accessibility audits, safe system assessments, and Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessments (LCSIAs). We can also review the safety effects of other changes to transport networks.

ViaStrada has audited all five project stages of the Grafton Gully cycleway in Auckland. The last stage was technically challenging, as the proposed facility had to be integrated into busy and complex signalised intersections. All audits were turned around in a very short time.
ViaStrada Ltd was engaged by the Otago Regional Council to identify the safety and access issues for walking and cycling along the Harbourside arterial route between the Frederick Street and Anzac Avenue intersection and the Ravensbourne Road roundabout. From this initial review ViaStrada identified what can be retrofitted to address the issues for both everyday walking and cycling traffic and for one-off events at the stadium.
ViaStrada was engaged by the NZTA to undertake the detail design and post-construction stage road safety audits of this major upgrade of Dunedin’s southern arterial route. ViaStrada prepared NZTA-compliant road safety audit reports of this complex, two-stage project that involved converting the existing two-lane road to a four-lane road with service road. This covered the SH1 Caversham bypass from the King Edward Street bridge to Lookout Point and included overpasses & access ramps.
ViaStrada was engaged by the NZTA to carry out a detail design stage safety audit of a proposed roundabout on Tay Street, Invercargill. The intersection is the main entrance to the city for drivers travelling southwest on SH1. ViaStrada prepared a NZTA-compliant detail design stage road safety audit for the proposed the roundabout. The roundabout is in a 50-km/h urban area on the eastern end of Tay Street (SH1) and replaces the existing priority-controlled crossroads.
ViaStrada was commissioned by Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) to peer review the concept plans of proposed changes to Walding Street, an arterial road that forms part of the city's ring road system. The project's objective was to improve safety and efficiency of the ring road for all users.
This desktop review was based on concept plans that PNCC had prepared. The review identified issues or concerns regarding the concept plan design and included possible alternatives. Indicative sketches were included where necessary to identify or clarify comments noted.
ViaStrada's traffic engineers undertook a scheme design stage safety audit of a proposed upgrade of Elles Road, Invercargill. Elles Road is a busy arterial in a commercial area of Invercargill and features many commercial entrances, traffic signals and a pedestrian crossing. The audit was carried out in accordance with Austroads and NZTA guidelines.
