National Cycleway

ViaStrada welcomes Government's announcement of a $50 million fund for the New Zealand Cycleway initiative. It is proposed that ‘Great Rides’ will be based around some of New Zealand’s iconic attractions and make use of infrastructure that is already there. In addition, the ‘Great Rides’ will hep implement regional and local government community based initiatives to create new cycleways. The fund allocation is for the next three financial years.

Project sponsors apply to the National Cycleway Fund to advance work on projects that align with the New Zealand Cycleway concept. Funding will largely be in the form of grants to project principals (such as councils) to assist with development.

ViaStrada is uniquely placed to assist organisations with their planning. We are NZ's experts when it comes to planning for cycling, and the provision of cycling infrastructure. We also have particular expertise in engineering and planning for walking, evidenced by our experience teaching the transport profession about planning and design for walking and cycling

We would be happy to assist regions, districts and cities (or other agencies interested in proposing projects) with any of their planning and design needs. Our particular expertise includes:

  • Cycleway network planning and mapping
  • Estimating demand for new facilities
  • Funding applications
  • Land use planning - land ownership and consent issues
  • Detailed design and construction (including standards and guidelines)
  • Peer review of other designs
  • Navigating the network - signage best practice
  • Establishment of cycle counting programmes and systems.

We have partnership agreements in place to be able to cover landscape design and urban design. We also have an alliance with rural track design experts.
