City to Sea Pathway Safe System Audit
Christchurch City Council is building a pathway connecting the City to the Sea along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.

In 2020 the Client sought to improve the conspicuity of pedestrian crossing locations without delaying motor traffic and settled on flush red "courtesy" crossings.
These have raised concerns, especially amongst the elderly and mobility-impaired community as they do not clearly establish who has right of way and drivers are not slowing down.

Christchurch City Council’s transport team has completed many safety improvements over the last National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) period. Multiple streams of funding included Transport Choices, Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF), Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Facility (CRAFT) and other transport funds were used to complete multiple projects throughout Ōtautahi.

ViaStrada with our local knowledge and expertise were contracted to carry out a desktop review of proposed Road Safety Platforms (RSPs) at the Yaldhurst and Curlett’s Road intersection at the detailed design stage of the project.

Brew Moon cannot provide any parking on site, but their current resource consent enables operations using on-street parking. ViaStrada prepared parking occupancy count forms to enable the Client to conduct their own rigorous surveys, saving the Client money. We then analysed the results and demonstrated that even with a substantial increase in patronage, there would be sufficient on-street parking to cater for the demand. We also conducted noise level monitoring to support a request to remove a consent condition relating to amplified music in the courtyard area.

Shared paths and cycling facilities are increasingly used by a more diverse group of people and transport devices. To better reflect the needs of these users and inform a review of geometric design guidance, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency commissioned ViaStrada to conduct a speed, gender and device type survey in 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2024 at several sites in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Christchurch City Council was successful in receiving funding from the Streets for People programme. ViaStrada provided the technical advice and design from the initial concept, and scheme through to detailed design to make Aranui streets more people friendly. This project was rolled out using a tactical urbanism approach to implement changes in a cost-effective manner for the community to adapt to and provide feedback on.

Transitional cycleways are a series of projects across Wellington that included use of quick-build materials for building a network of cycleways often through very challenging corridors. The corridors feature a combination of on-road separated cycleways, neighbourhood greenways, off-road paths, and raised dual crossings.
