September focus: The ins and outs of parking

With the New Zealand Parking Association Conference just around the corner (9-10 September in Wellington), it's a great time to reflect on something we all use but rarely stop to think about: parking. While it might seem straightforward, good parking is about much more than fitting cars into spaces. It's about balancing access, safety, economic activity, visitor experiences, public transport, and even active travel.

Over the past few years, ViaStrada has worked on a wide range of parking projects, from understanding parking demand in Dunedin's city centre to developing parking management plans for destinations such as Pukenamu Queens Park in Whanganui. We’ve also developed improved parking layout options for locations such as Queenstown Airport and Te Anau. And we’ve helped developers to work out how best to fit different types of vehicles into driveways and garages for their proposed developments, including Lincoln and Bay of Plenty. These projects often reveal that the challenge isn't always a lack of parking, but making existing parking work better through good design, access management, and improved connections for people walking and cycling. 

Of course, parking isn't just for cars. Our work has included planning bus parking and circulation for cruise ship operations at Lyttelton Port, helping visitors move efficiently and safely between transport services and destinations. We've also contributed to national guidance on cycle parking and helped deliver bike hub projects, recognising that secure and convenient parking is just as important for people arriving by bike as it is for those arriving by car. 

Then there's Park(ing) Day, a global initiative that temporarily transforms parking spaces into people-focused public places, encouraging communities to reimagine how street space can be used. This year's event takes place on 18 September and offers a timely reminder that parking is ultimately about supporting the places where people live, work, visit, and connect.
