  • Roundabout scheme and detail design audits

    PNCC engaged ViaStrada to undertake scheme and detail design stage road safety audits of a number of roundabout upgrades at city intersections. All projects required the preparation of a road safety audit report in accordance with the NZTA Road Safety Audit Procedures for Projects (May 2013). The safety of all road users and pedestrians were key considerations.

  • Palmerston Nth Bikes in Schools review

    The Palmerston North City Council has implemented Bikes in Schools (BiS) at six local schools. Typically, a BiS programme includes a circuit track, skills track and pump track on site at school, together with sufficient bikes and helmets for classes to use them for different activities.

  • Queenstown Airport parking & access concept development

    A significant increase in passenger numbers at Queenstown Airport put pressure on many parts of the existing infrastructure, including the road network, car and coach parking, terminal servicing and passenger drop off and collection facilities. 

    ViaStrada developed multiple concept through to design plans that incorporated QAC staff input for all vehicle and pedestrian facilities at the airport, including significant changes to the roading network and car and coach parking areas. All proposed works were incorporated in a staged Master Plan.

  • Wakapuaka subdivision capacity assessment of local roads

    ViaStrada was engaged by the NZ Transport Agency to assess the impact of a proposed new subdivision on the existing local road network. The scope of the assessment included: visit to the site with NZTA staff, SIDRA modelling of the existing local road network and State Highway 6 intersections with traffic generated by the proposed subdivision. An assessment report on the ability of the local road network, including its intersections with SH6, to accommodate the traffic generated by the proposed Wakapuaka subdivision.

  • Regulations and safety for electric bicycles and other low-powered vehicles

    This research report presents a review of overseas legislation, technology trends, market and safety analyses for low-powered, low-speed vehicles. These vehicles include electric bicycles, mobility scooters, self-balancing devices and other personal mobility or wheeled recreational devices. Based on a literature review, consultation with key stakeholders in two forums and an online survey with over 1200 responses, the research assesses various regulatory and non-regulatory options for improving safety while supporting technological innovation and mode choice options in New Zealand.

  • Eltham Road / Beaver Road concept plan and design

    ViaStrada was commissioned to prepare a concept plan with design options for the Eltham Road / Beaver Road corridor, an important north/south link across Blenheim that serves three major schools and a day care centre.  The concepts include intersection improvements to aid pedestrians and people on bikes in crossing busy streets as well as consideration of parking requirements at Whitney Street school.

  • Hastings District school travel plans

    ViaStrada's John Lieswyn led the development of travel plans for nine primary and high schools within the Hastings District, and assisted the Hastings District Council with their own workplace travel plan. The project formed part of HDC's iWay programme, which aims to tackle declining rates of walking and cycling with carefully planned, sustained investment in walking and cycling.

  • Marshland Road audit

    ViaStrada was engaged by Christchurch City Council to carry out a scheme design safety audit of a proposed signalised intersection on Marshland Road. ViaStrada prepared a scheme stage safety audit of the proposed signalisation of the Marshland / Lower Styx / Hawkins intersection. Marshland Road is a minor arterial with a 70 km/h speed environment.

  • Ranolf Link road safety audit

    ViaStrada was engaged by Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) to undertake a detail design stage road safety audit of the proposed shared use path on Ranolf Street between Arawa Street and Sophia Street. The audit covered the proposed cycle facilities on Ranolf Street between Sophia Street and Devon Street and the shared use path that runs on the east side of Ranolf Street between Devon Street and Arawa Street.

  • Bealey Avenue audit

    ViaStrada was commissioned by Christchurch City Council to undertake a detail design stage road safety audit of interim works at the Bealey Avenue / Madras Street signalised intersection. ViaStrada prepared a NZ Transport Agency-compliant detail design stage road safety audit of the proposed interim changes at this major city intersection ahead of a planned reseal. Bealey Avenue has an AADT of 38,000 (2011).
