Wellington to Hutt Valley cycle route safety audit
Stage 1 (Mar 2014 – Jul 2015):
ViaStrada performed a design audit of multiple cycle route sections between Ngauranga and Petone, including on-road and off-road sections, shared paths, exclusive cycle paths, on-road lanes and various intersection treatments.
Stage 2 (Jul 2015 – Nov 2015):
Stage 2 included safety advice based on a multi-criteria analysis of nine design options.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeInterim separated pathway separators
ViaStrada was commissioned to undertake an investigation of possible separation devices for protected pathways that are intended to be "temporary" (i.e. a lifespan of 3 to 5 years before more substantive facilities are introduced). ViaStrada defined several criteria: temporary; level of service for people who cycle; attractive in appearance; and high value for money for ratepayers. A number of devices were identified and assessed according to these criteria, with recommendations and possible applications outlined in a report.
These devices included:
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeAuckland Central Motorway Junction cycleway
Working with AECOM, GHD and MWH, ViaStrada performed a series of six audits for:
- Central Motorway Junction shared use paths
- Upper Queen Street, and the Nelson Street cycleway
- Grafton Gully/Upper Queen Street.
The work included site visits, plan markups, scheme and detailed design safety audit reports, and professional development training.
Key Contact: Jon AshfordNazareth House
ViaStrada designed the internal roads for Nazareth House, a retirement village and healthcare complex in the Christchurch suburb of Sydenham.
Key Contact: Warren LloydPalmerston North bridge assessment
During 2014, ViaStrada investigated a network of connected shared paths on the southern side (left bank) of the Manawatu River in Palmerston North and the preliminary location of a new pedestrian cycle bridge across the Manawatu River.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeGrafton Gully cycleway audits
ViaStrada has audited all five project stages of the Grafton Gully cycleway in Auckland. The last stage was technically challenging, as the proposed facility had to be integrated into busy and complex signalised intersections. All audits were turned around in a very short time.
Key Contact: Jon AshfordPassing lane and overtaking opportunities
The top of the South Island generally has rugged terrain, with winding roads resulting in poor sight distances and little flat land on either side of the state highways. The region’s state highway network crosses many streams and rivers where bridge and culvert structures restrict opportunities for the carriageway (lanes and sealed shoulder) to be widened.
Key Contact: Warren LloydSouth Dunedin cycle network
ViaStrada was engaged to develop the first package of concepts and scheme designs for the South Dunedin Cycle Network, providing cycle facilities with community connections that will link to a wider network suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeDunedin cycleway network development
South Dunedin Strategic Cycle Network (Jan 2012 – Jan 2013) included planning and engineering for six routes delivered as a package, with endorsement from the NZ Transport Agency.
Central City Planning and Design (Mar–May 2013) provided advice on a wide range of issues including ways to achieve ‘quick wins’ to build support for cycleways (‘social license to operate’), strategic cycleway planning and scheme designs to inform the city’s strategic business case, and general traffic engineering.Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeCycling Code of Practice
ViaStrada developed the cycling-related content for the region-wide Code of Practice, including a lexicon for cycling facility types. Documents from seven of the amalgamated local authorities were combined and updated, with rationalisation of different dimensions to reflect current best practices.
