Sparks Road route safety audit, Christchurch
The section of Sparks Road between Halswell Road and Hendersons Road has been the subject of concerns raised by local residents. These concerns relate to the perceived high volume of heavy vehicles, the perceived excessive speed of vehicles and the overall level of safety of the road and specifically the level of safety at the Milnes Road intersection.
Key Contact: Warren LloydCambridge Tce street renewal & riverbank enhancement
This project was carried out by Axel Wilke whilst he was still employed by Christchurch City Council (CCC), and Wayne Rimmer (Landscape Architect). Axel and Wayne were commissioned to develop a strategic plan for the section of the Avon River between Kilmore and Barbadoes Streets as part of the CCC Avon River (Central City) Masterplan.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeConstruction Standards Specification amendment, Christchurch
Christchurch City Council has an extensive Construction Standards Specification (CSS) document. ViaStrada staff were engaged to lead a team of Council officers through the development of a new standard detail for intersection thresholds.
A little bit of effort invested into these standard details will subsequently save valuable time on individual intersection designs. The CCC team was impressed and the next standard will be tackled soon.

A University of Canterbury research team (Susan Krumdieck, Andre Dantas and Shannon Page) commissioned Traffix (now ViaStrada) for the peer review phase of their LTNZ research project. The topic is fascinating – researching the interaction between energy risk (i.e. oil supply) and urban form.
An interesting read for the Traffix team and a client with lots of valuable feedback. That’s what’s called "win – win".
The work has been published as Research Report 311 by Land Transport NZ.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeAudit methodology for Canterbury regional cycle network
Environment Canterbury (ECan) is developing a regional cycle network plan. ViaStrada staff developed an audit methodology, enabling alternative network elements to be compared with one another. The resulting methodology combines site visits with a clever RAMM assessment.
Key Contact: Warren LloydAuckland regional cycle network assessment
MWH New Zealand Ltd (Christchurch) and ViaStrada evaluated five different potential cycle network models. ARTA’s British expert peer reviewer thought that our GIS-based methodology, using Auckland demographic data and existing transport models, was pretty clever.
End result – a clear idea of how to develop the regional cycling network (and a happy client!).

The Port Hills is a precious environment that requires sensitive design that meets the need of all users. The objective was to accentuate the passive use of the area while accommodating vehicle access.
Key Contact: Warren LloydChesney St / Scott St, Invercargill – proposed intersection realignment
Invercargill City Council is faced with some challenging traffic engineering at this rural intersection. ViaStrada was commissioned to confirm their conceptual design. We identified some areas that will need specialist input during the detailed design phase.
We enjoy working with local authorities, adding our specialist knowledge to their teams and mentoring their staff.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeComries/Hukanui, Hamilton – proposed signalisation
ViaStrada has assisted MWH Hamilton with reviewing a proposed signalised T intersection in Hamilton. The client wanted us to identify potential cost savings. We developed variations on a broad concept which enhanced safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists and could save the client $100,000 to $150,000.
A recommendation for bus activated signal priority was also well received by the client. Talk about adding value to the project!

Halswell Road is part of SH 75 through Christchurch, with Transit NZ intending to signalise the intersection. Christchurch City Council tasked ViaStrada with peer reviewing the design by Transit’s consultant.
Six pages of comments are testimony to ViaStrada’s knowledge about signalised intersections.
