  • Road Safety Audit - Roundabout in Palmerston North

ViaStrada was engaged by Palmerston North City Council  to undertake a preliminary design stage safety audit of a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Albert Street, a local road with an AADT of 6,033 and Grey Street, a collector road with an AADT of 7,600. Both roads have a posted speed limit of 50 km/h. The intersection is located in a residential area to the north east of the city centre.

  • Traffic signal audit on State Highway 73

ViaStrada was engaged to undertake a detail design stage safety audit of a new signalised intersection where the “Noble Village” subdivision access road connects to the southern side of Yaldhurst Road (State Highway 73). This section of SH73 is a two lane road with a 100 km/h posted speed limit.  The transition from a high speed environment to a lower speed environment using set of traffic signals requires specialist signals design knowledge that ViaStrada was able to apply to this audit.

  • Don Buck Road audit

ViaStrada was engaged by Auckland Transport to undertake a scheme design stage road safety audit of a proposed new signalised intersection on a strategic arterial route in the Auckland suburb of Massey with a 2008 traffic count of approximately 37,000 vehicles per day. ViaStrada prepared a NZ Transport Agency-compliant road safety audit of a proposed new signalised intersection on Hobsonville Road (since renamed to Fred Taylor Drive) to replace the existing roundabout at Don Buck Road. The proposal also features kerb-separated cycle lanes on both sides of the road.

  • Dakota Park roundabout

ViaStrada was commissioned by Christchurch International Airport Ltd to conduct a review of a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Ron Guthrey Drive and two new roads, which would form part of the new Dakota Park development precinct at the airport.  The development will provide a high standard of accommodation for warehousing, logistics industries and other businesses.

The objective of the review was to determine if the land required for the proposed roundabout was appropriate and whether the proposed design was safe and had capacity for the future.

  • The Catlins, Cathedral Caves access road safety review

ViaStrada was commissioned by the Tautuku Block Trust to undertake an assessment of the current access road to the Cathedral Caves.  The caves are in an isolated location off the Southern Scenic Route SH92 in Otago and are accessed via a private road that leads to the car park at the start of the cave walk. The Trust were concerned about the safety of the public and their staff using the road which is steep, winding, narrow and has drop off areas in some locations.  The caves can be visited when the tide is low and visitors can gain access along the beach to the caves.

  • Waitaki District Council safety audits

ViaStrada was commissioned to undertake a series of post construction safety audits for the Waitaki District Council. Safety audits were carried out on intersection treatments in two urban locations in Oamaru and five rural pavement rehabilitation projects.

The audits followed guidelines set out in the Transfund New Zealand's Road Safety Audit Guide (2004). To undertake the audits, ViaStrada used the WDC District Plan, MOTSAM parts 1 and 2, the NZ Geometric Design Manual (draft) and current best practice used and taught by ViaStrada.

  • Christchurch cycle network plan

    IMPORTANT NOTE

The project summary which follows describes a recommended cycle network which will likely require amendment post the Christchurch earthquakes, and will also need to be approved as part of the larger Christchurch Transport Plan.  It does not represent adopted council policy.

    Overview and Background

Stage 1 (completed in 2009) involved mapping the existing cycle lane and shared path networks.  The deliverable from stage 1 was a GIS map of the data collected.
