FiveMile parking provision plan, Queenstown
The client wanted to show that they had made provision for various on street parking demands in FiveMile. This included short and long term parking and included loading zones. Added to this was the identification of ramps to and from the off street underground parking.
Key Contact: Warren LloydNZTA continuous cycle counting research
ViaStrada researched continuous cycle counting technology for the New Zealand Transport Agency. By "continuous" we mean counts of a few months duration or longer. Shorter-term counts (days or weeks) are probably best done by conventional rubber tube cycle counters, although this decision may best be made based on value for money of the various options. The aim is to provide road controlling authorities and others in New Zealand with information on the effectiveness and availability of these tools.

ViaStrada was engaged by Tauranga City Council (TCC) to undertake the scheme development of the arterial road (Te Okuroa Drive) servicing the Wairakei (stage 1), and subsequently Te Tumu (stage 2), urban expansion in Papamoa as envisaged by Western Bay of Plenty's SmartGrowth strategy.

Megan Fowler's first project at ViaStrada was to assist Tim Hughes of Land Transport New Zealand (now the New Zealand Transport Agency) in completing the Pedestrian Planning and Design Guide.

This project consisted of two components:
- an internet-based survey of road controlling authorities (RCAs) and regional councils about their experience and interest in counting cycle traffic, either manually or automatically, and
- a literature review of traffic-counting technology able to detect and monitor cycle traffic on a continuous basis.
The survey of councils and Transit offices found that:
About half of the RCAs and regional councils that responded to the survey have counted cycle traffic in recent years:
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeRegional walking and cycling strategy, Bay of Plenty
Environment Bay of Plenty asked a number of consultants to bid on the development of a regional walking and cycling strategy in September 2007. We won the tender and have since held three intensive stakeholder meetings to refine the strategy. Participation included all six district councils, Land Transport NZ, Transit NZ, two district health boards, the police, Sport BOP and a local cycling advocacy group, Cycle Aware Tauranga.
Key Contact: Warren LloydMOTSAM update
Transit NZ (now NZTA) commissioned ViaStrada to update the cycling-related road marking content of the Manual of Traffic Signs and Markings (MOTSAM). In a parallel process, we were also assisting in a revision of the NZ Supplement to Austroads Part 14 Bicycles, the NZ cycling design manual (the revisions have now been published). We think the industry has been eagerly awaiting the outcome of these processes.

ViaStrada has been commissioned to design provisions for cyclists in some of the more challenging locations of Dunedin's arterial network. Dunedin City Council picked us as their preferred consultant because of our nationally recognised expertise in this area.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeRiding across crossings
Should cyclists be allowed to ride across zebra crossings? When you've got a tricky question like this, who do you ask for sound and reasoned advice? VicRoads, the state roading authority for Victoria, based in Melbourne, sought the answer from ViaStrada. We reviewed international literature and based on this, gave our professional opinion on the merits of cycling across zebra crossings, signalised mid-block crossings, and crosswalks at signalised intersection.
Key Contact: Axel Downard-WilkeAvonside Fitzgerald Kilmore signalised intersection
This project has two 'drivers':
- The Fitzgerald bridge over the Avon River needs to be earthquake strengthened.
- The adjacent intersection has a high crash record.
Our team has undertaken the design work for the intersection upgrade. Due to a high occurance of right-turn-against-crashes, an interim measure has been implemented, banning one right turn movement and having full turn protection for another.
