Intersections

For this project we sub-contracted to TM Consultants to develop a concept, scheme, and detailed design for the signalised intersection at the Waimakariri Junction commercial development. We also designed much of the internal road layout of the development. The new intersection design incorporated the following objectives:
safety, efficiency, to provide access for people in vehicles, and people walking and cycling.

In order to optimise the function and safety of the route by mode and time of day, ViaStrada and Aurecon conducted site audits at eight intersections; researched the planning and engineering context; identified capacity constraints; analysed crash data and safety issues, considered modal requirements; identified engineering and operational improvements with costings.

Meeanee Road and the northern leg of Guppy Road are designated arterials, with the southern leg of Guppy being a secondary collector. The existing signalised intersection has been in place since at least 2009 while major land use and transportation developments such as the new dual roundabout SH50 expressway interchange have been implemented in the area. Both of the two west approach lanes are shared through and turn lanes, which can create capacity and safety issues (including sight lines to oncoming traffic).

ViaStrada was contracted by Whanganui District Council to design or retrofit five sets of signalised intersections so that the Te Tuaiwi pathway could be incorporated. We organised traffic counts, undertook scheme planning and provided the client with options, and then took the agreed schemes to a detailed design ready for implementation by the client's contractor.

Marlborough Roads engaged ViaStrada to develop an improved roundabout design for the Alabama Road and Weld Street intersection. This site has residential houses on three quadrants and a large supermarket on the fourth quadrant. The roundabout improvement project builds on the previous cycle safety assessment ViaStrada undertook in early 2018 of five roundabouts and four routes in Blenheim. Of the five roundabouts studied, the Alabama Road and Weld Street roundabout had the second highest number of cyclist-involved crashes (9 crashes recorded in the CAS database).

PNCC engaged ViaStrada to undertake scheme and detail design stage road safety audits of a number of roundabout upgrades at city intersections. All projects required the preparation of a road safety audit report in accordance with the NZTA Road Safety Audit Procedures for Projects (May 2013). The safety of all road users and pedestrians were key considerations.

Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) engaged ViaStrada to undertake post construction road safety audits of a number of recently completed roundabout upgrades at city intersections. All projects required the preparation of a post construction road safety audit report in accordance with the NZTA Road Safety Audit Procedures for Projects (May 2013). This includes a day and night time site visit.

ViaStrada was engaged by Palmerston North City Council  to undertake a preliminary design stage safety audit of a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Albert Street, a local road with an AADT of 6,033 and Grey Street, a collector road with an AADT of 7,600. Both roads have a posted speed limit of 50 km/h. The intersection is located in a residential area to the north east of the city centre.

ViaStrada was commissioned by Christchurch International Airport Ltd to conduct a review of a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Ron Guthrey Drive and two new roads, which would form part of the new Dakota Park development precinct at the airport.  The development will provide a high standard of accommodation for warehousing, logistics industries and other businesses.

The objective of the review was to determine if the land required for the proposed roundabout was appropriate and whether the proposed design was safe and had capacity for the future.

As part of the Westfield expansion of Riccarton Mall, the intersection of Clarence Street and Dilworth Street was converted from a give way intersection to traffic signals. ViaStrada was commissioned by Westfield to design the new layout, undertake the community consultation and prepare final design plans for construction. Finalising the layout required working closely with the Christchurch City Council, the traffic signals contractor and the client.
